Guinea has the world's largest reserves of bauxite, the mineral used for the production of aluminum. With a high aluminum content, Guinea's bauxite reserves are estimated at more than 40 billion tonnes, of which 23 billion tonnes are located in the Boké region.
Highly competitive, Guinea’s production now supplies the major global markets. The reserves are mainly located in the following regions: Lower Guinea (Boké, Kindia, Fria, Boffa), Central Guinea, in the Fouta-Djalon massif (Tougué, Pita, Mali, Mamou, Dalaba) and Upper Guinea (Dinguiraye, Dabola, Siguiri).
Fifth-largest bauxite producer in the world in 2014 (Source: World Bank, Commodity Markets Outlook, January 2016), Guinea has world-class reserves, both in quality and quantity. With the recent entry into production of new industrial players in Guinea and the increase in production capacity of existing operators, the country has the capacity to an annual production of 40 to 60 million tons by 2018, with a target of 100 million tons per year.
The signing of major investment agreements since 2013 and the arrival of new industrial players in Guinea have indeed triggered a new momentum in the bauxite sector in Guinea. This boom has confirmed Guinea’s position as a major player in the international bauxite market and as a destination for massive investments.
With key projects in the development phase and soon in production, Guinea is on its way to becoming one of the world’s leading platforms for bauxite and soon aluminum. Along with the goal of significantly increasing bauxite production, the country is currently implementing, together with its industrial, technical and financial partners, a strategy for mining in Guinea.
