Ambassador of Guinea Meets with Kuwaiti Labor Officials to Discuss Domestic Worker Protections

His Excellency Mr. Mamady Traore, Ambassador of Guinea to Kuwait, met with key Kuwaiti labor officials on Tuesday, September 25, 2018, to address the recurring issues faced by Guinean domestic workers in Kuwait.

The Ambassador first met with Mr. Mubarak Al-Azmi, National Director of Labour in Kuwait, from 10:15 to 11:00 AM. This meeting followed a previous discussion with Mr. Sami Abdulaziz Ahmad Alhamad, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs to Consular Affairs, held on September 13, 2018.

During the meeting, Ambassador Traore expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by Kuwaiti authorities in managing cases of Guinean domestic workers facing difficulties. He then presented two key proposals:

  1. To expedite the admission of Guinean domestic workers to accommodation centers upon their arrival at the embassy while their situations are being regularized.
  2. To establish a Memorandum of Understanding between Guinea and Kuwait to organize the recruitment of domestic workers.

Mr. Al-Azmi outlined a simplified procedure for admitting workers to accommodation centers, which involves taking fingerprints to identify sponsors and recruitment offices. He also highlighted the existence of a Kuwaiti law that protects domestic workers' rights in accordance with international standards. A French translation of this law was provided to the Ambassador.

Following this productive discussion, Ambassador Traore paid a courtesy visit to Colonel Abdulla Rashed Al Hajri, Assistant Director General for Administration and Public Affairs.

These meetings represent a significant step towards improving the working conditions and protections for Guinean domestic workers in Kuwait. The Embassy of Guinea remains committed to ensuring the well-being of its citizens abroad while fostering positive diplomatic relations with Kuwait.
